A little over a year ago my sweet friend and beloved member of our music community, Cali McKasson Kovin, passed away. I wrote a tune for Cali and her husband Chris on their wedding day and then recorded this lesson for FiddleVideo.com while Cali was still with us. We’ve just gotten around to editing it and wanted to share it with you as a free lesson. If you have a chance, check out Cali’s beautiful music with her brother Ryan McKasson and family at the Seattle Folklife Festival 2019.

Up From The Streets: New Orleans: The City of Music – “Virtual” Film release May 15th

Filmmaker Michael Murphy is presenting his new award-winning film, Up From The Streets: New Orleans: The City of Music, in an effort to raise money for Louisiana musicians who have lost income amid the Covid-19 pandemic. A celebration of the music and culture of New Orleans over the decades, it features performances by Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, Neville Brothers and Preservation Hall, archival footage of Louis Armstrong and other jazz legends as well as interviews with Wynton Marsalis, Bonnie Raitt, Sting and Robert Plant. The film will begin showing in more than 50 “virtual cinemas” on May 15th.

Virtual Jams!

May 2, 10 – 11:30am – The Skandia Jam is alive and well . . . and virtual!  Join us for a session of music making on Saturday, May 2, 10:00-11:30am.
If you would like to attend the jam session, send an email to music@skandia-folkdance.org to get the Zoom link. We will send you the link, provide instructions for sound settings, suggest a couple of Zoom etiquette pointers, and ask if you’d like to lead any tunes. We hope to see you there!

A free, weekly Facebook-LIVE session with Tony Furtado – He will play banjo and slide guitar based songs/tunes, talk about other players and gear… and answer questions!

Cafe Lena streams nightly concerts as part of their Stay at Home Sessions. Coming up on Tuesday April 14th they will feature a Don White concert, just recorded in Nov. 2019. Don plans to be on the Chat that night. Alaisdair Frasier and Natalie Hass are scheduled fo April 16. On April 19th Cafe Lena will air a show with Peter Yarrow, and again, he plans to participate in the Chat. This is a great chance to see some marvelous concerts. After they air,  they will be up on Lena’s site to view.  See the full upcoming lineup, and the previously released concerts now available to view ( John Gorka, Joe Jencks, and others) at the Cafe Lena YouTube home page.
There is a tip jar available if you so desire, with the proceeds being split between the artist and Lena’s. It helps the artist, and the club in these difficult times.

MAKE  MUSIC FEDERAL WAY DEBUTS ON JUNE 21

Over 15 Free Outdoor Music Making Events to be Held across Federal Way as Part of Annual Global Celebration

 Federal Way Lions Club, Federal Way, June 21, 2019 – The first annual Make Music Federal Way, a wild and wonderful mix of over 15 free outdoor musical events, will make its debut on Friday, June 21. Make Music Federal Way is part of Make Music Day, a global music celebration that takes place on the summer solstice each year and brings people of all ages and skill levels together to make music. This year, over 80 U.S. cities and the entire states of Vermont and Connecticut will host thousands of Make Music performances across the country as part of the world’s largest annual music event.

Make Music Day began in France in 1982 as the Fête de la Musique, and has spread to over 1,000 cities across 120 countries. Completely different from a typical musical festival, Make Music concerts are performed by anyone who wants to take part and enjoyed by everyone who wants to attend. From classical to folk, hip hop to opera, Latin jazz to punk rock, live music of all kinds resounds on streets, sidewalks, porches, plazas, parks, gardens, store fronts and other public spaces on the longest day of the year.

Highlights of Make Music Federal Way will include:

o   Flag Raising at 10:30 am with trumpet and drums

o   Free Lessons in Blues Harmonica, Bucket Drumming, and Guitar strum-along (BYOG – bring your own guitar!)
