SFS Board Meeting June 5, 2007 In attendance: Bruce Baker, Warren Argo, Ralph Kosche, JoAnne Rudo, Fred Maslan, Karen Shaw, Valerie Cohen, Adam Carlson, Jack Aldrich, John Ullman Also: Joel Tepp, Sandy MacDonald Action items: Bruce - phone mailbox & privacy policy Sandy MacDonald - Contact Renee Bodie, would someone from concert committee report back, I'm sure we're all interested in the progress on this Joel Tepp proposal -- Executive Summary: SFS should sponsor a showcase at the next FarWest conference as part of an effort to create greater integration of the west coast folk concert venues. We should also consider working with Renee Bodie to provide concert opportunities up and down the coast for touring musicians. - FarWest conference has been a great source of gigs, inspiration and good energy - Big main showcase for "name" acts - Musicians can rent rooms for smaller "guerilla" showcases - Musicians go from room to room and play for small crowds (works well because showcase sets can lead to a string of gigs that constitute a tour.) - guerilla showcases can't "compete" with main stage - Sponsored showcases somewhere in between main showcase and guerilla showcases. - Renee Bodie runs a successful house concert in CA. It would be beneficial if local performers had access to it. Getting some cross-pollination would be good for all. - She wants SFS to become an active participant in coordinating with other area venues to open California gigs to NW artists and to provide resources to help put together tours. - She wants an SFS sponsored showcase at FarWest this year (Nov) - Wes Weddell has also talked about getting an SFS Sponsored showcase - Sandy says concert committee has already started looking into this - National Folk Alliance really focuses on helping musicians, not producers/organizer s - SFS CC has already started coordinating w/ other regional orgs, but it's difficult because noone wants to do a Thurs. night concert. - Another direction is getting people booked into established venues like the Tractor. - First step - be a presence in Portland in November and get people to know and recognize us. - Sandy/Valerie - It's hard to coordinate because the players change, etc. - What would costs of showcase be? - For Guerilla showcase: - Rent a hotel room for 3 night (+ trappings?) - Registration with FarWest as a showcase - Food/Beverage - Printing costs - P.A. ? - For Sponsored showcase: - ??? - Need to find out what previous sponsors (in Austin?) experience was - Hans York hosted a very good guerilla showcase - would be a good reference - Sandy will contact Renee, get more information and share it with the board - Sandy - Want NW performers to share dates - Sandy - Want a variety (enough male singer/songwriters) - Sandy - Volunteers must be willing to produce a given show - Warren - We should be more of a hub connecting musicians to the NW - John - Many gigs make light expenses - John - Coordination may mean committing to producing some shows you're not thrilled about (less locally well known performers, non-Saturday nights, etc.), which is tough with an all volunteer setup - John - Passion of producers is important - Sandy will be in touch with Renee to determine what the next step is and if we should take it. Committee Reports - Finance - May 15 - Due date for tax return met! - From an operating perspective, we're losing $2000 a year (which is covered by investment income) - If you include all activities (concert, rainy camp, etc.) we're +$5000 - Rolled CD 100k into 5.15% money market - $20k in 5% money market - $5000 in annualized interest income this year - Operating account has $8000 - Concerts - Valerie offered an addendum to Susan's report - Fall program (as it currently stands) - Dance - Dance will move account to SFS - Picnic - Aug 19, Jack's house, 3:30, Board meeting 2:30
